This deceptively simple and seemingly innocuous question has been sticking to me like glue. What if you enjoyed it?
Let me back up a step. I had something upcoming on my agenda, a radio interview, that had me stressing out. The question was asked of me quietly, unobtrusively, by Kristen Bentley during a coaching session. What if you enjoyed it? Despite the gentle way it was proposed, it took hold of me forcefully and would not let go. I’ve been thinking about it all week.
In fact, I realized this question applies to so many things in my life – ordinary activities that feel like they are difficult or burdensome at times. What if I enjoyed going to Boot Camp? What if I choose to celebrate the fact that I am getting stronger, that I can move my body, jump in the air, touch my toes, lift those heavy weights? What if instead of feeling burdened by healthy eating and meal preparation, I am grateful for the availability of healthy choices and the money to buy them? What if my gratitude opens the way for joy? What if I let go of the pressure of writing this weekly blog and, in enjoying it, see it as a blessing that helps me reflect and learn and grow? There are 1000 small tasks that this could apply to. What if I chose to enjoy them, or let them go?
Is there an area of your life you could ask the question, “What if I enjoyed it?”
Choice is our power.
If you’d like to listen to the radio interview this week where Gail Barker and I have a conversation about courage – what it is, why it matters, how to develop it – the show will be on Sunday, October 7th between 8:30-9am(EST) on 106.9thex FM (for those in London Ontario), or live online here.
I work with women to awaken the courage to find their version of extraordinary and live it! I’d love to put my honours degree in social work and my expertise in coaching to work for you. Connect with me here.
